Woodworking Tips:

Western Red Cedar is recommended, but other
good outdoor woods include: poplar, treated lumber, teak, cypress, redwood, and
mahogany.

Having
a well-developed woodworking plan and pattern will be the difference that
allows for a great result.
Tools and Materials:
-
Although virtually any
object may be constructed with minimal hand tools, we're often asked what
tools are needed for this project. This is a difficult question to
answer since there is a multiplicity of alternate approaches that may be
used due to the nature of woodworking, and so the hobbyist may use their
judgment as to the tools needed. Viewing this question as a matter
of ease, this project is most simple for the woodworker who owns a table
saw, electric jigsaw, coping saw, padded clamps, drills, square, level,
sanding block, etc. And purely optional, other tools make a project
like this even easier such as a table-mounted router, specific use
sanders, drill press, biscuit joiner, etc.

The Cape Cod'r calls
for 48 linear feet of 5/4 x 6” Western Red Cedar, 6 ft of 4x4 cedar post,
eighty #8 –1 ¾” flat-head outdoor grade screws (may substitute
galvanized), and a tube of polyurethane-type wood glue.
